Studio Mini-Sessions

by ehflegg

Erika, studio background

I’m very pleased to announce I’ll be hosting a round of portrait sessions on Sunday, March 24th! The event is happening in the nicest little natural-light studio in Gastown, and you can book your slot starting today.

Your session will be 25 minutes long and can be used for whatever your heart desires. It’s perfect for new headshots or social media photos, marking a milestone in the life of your littles, or having a portrait of you and your furry familiar (A client asked me a few weeks ago if I ever shoot pet portraits in studio, and I decided the answer to a question like that should always be YES).

I’ll also be including a 15-minute phone consultation so we can make a plan and you can get the most out of your time in the studio.

Got questions before you book? Just gimme a shout!

The Details:

When: Sunday, March 24th, 9am-1pm

Where: Studio One Room, 309 W Cordova Street, downtown Vancouver

Cost: $150

What you get: A 15-minute pre-shoot phone consult, and a minimum of 5 professional photographs, with printing rights

OneCity Winter Portraits

by ehflegg

Christine and Jennifer

It has been a few months since the municipal election, and the newly minted OneCity reps Christine Boyle (City Council) and Jennifer Reddy (Vancouver School Board) are in the thick of their gigs, advocating for anti-racist work in schools, declaring climate emergency in the city and becoming more and more visible. Since our first round of headshots happened in the heat and bright light of late summer, featuring sleeveless tops and nice tans, they wanted another set that better reflected the time of year and the tone of the work they’re doing. We joked (sort of) about aiming for an expression that said Serious But Not Too Angry Feminist (subtitle: Please Stop Sending Me Hate Mail), and I think we nailed it.

Shooting Portra, a beautiful, clean colour film stock, we captured Christine outside city hall, Jennifer near False Creek and then brought them together for a few fun ones as a pair. It was late afternoon, so the low sun gave us a lovely golden glow. Now they both have a collection of photos to use for media requests, bios and anything else that requires a professional portrait.

Meghan Bell Headshots

Meghan's portrait

I’ve been casually crossing paths with Room Magazine publisher Meghan Bell for awhile now, so it was very nice to finally officially meet her and spend some timing making pictures together in the beautiful Room offices (I know it’s cliche but I’m such a sucker for exposed brick. Also rooftop patios).

Family Photos for Christmas

by ehflegg

Danielle at home

Please forgive the slight overload of photos here, I’m just so thrilled with this shoot! These adorable, wonderful folks are my extended family, and this in-home family session was my Christmas present to them. I joined them for a classic Mennonite lunch of farmer sausage (insert usual joke about pacifists who eat farmers) and cottage cheese perogies, then we made a gingerbread house, cuddled the cat and headed out into the mountain air.

This is also my first time pushing film (shooting it at an iso higher than the film is actually rated, and adding a stop of exposure in development) and I must say I am smitten with the effect. Clean, bright colours, beautiful contrast, lots of detail—can’t get enough.

David Ly Author Photos

by ehflegg

I’m very spoiled to the live in the beautiful Mount Pleasant neighbourhood of Vancouver, and I’m even more spoiled when clients want to join me here for a saunter around the streets between Broadway and False Creek.

Writer David Ly needed author photos to go with his first full-length poetry book, Mythical Man, (coming out in the spring of 2020!) and he was a joy to shoot with. I hope you can see it shining through in these pictures.

Adele’s Headshots

by ehflegg

Adele

My life is chock full of award-winning poet femmes! Adele Barclay is one of my oldest and dearest friends (not to brag or anything) and her only request was to find some nice brick walls for backdrops. I think we fulfilled the brief admirably. The fall light co-operated nicely, and chasing it through downtown Vancouver led to some delightful spots.

As usual, I brought the digital camera for back up, but some high-iso stock and a few strategically placed lamp posts meant film came through for us, even after the sun went down.

Writer Leah Horlick’s Headshots

by ehflegg

Leah's headshot

When award-winning poet Leah Horlick (who also happens to be a dear friend of mine, nbd) asked me to make her some new headshots, I couldn’t say yes fast enough! On top of that she requested we use a warm and saturated film stock, so the whole session was just an Ektar-fueled, golden-hour-soaked dream.

Manbeena’s Headshots

by ehflegg

Manbeena

Drizzling September rain may not make for ideal headshot conditions, but if you’re a counsellor running a practice in the Pacific Northwest, you can’t say it’s not honest.

I shot both digital and film on this one, and actually made a bit of a gamble by loading up my camera with a roll of expired film (Agfa Vista, known for being very bright and saturated).

Well friends, I really lucked out with this three-dollar roll. I cannot get enough of these West Coast greens and blues, and the depth and texture of the film captures the beauty that only happens when you live in a place that rains nine months of the year. A much needed reminder heading into the long, wet winter.
