Flora & Family at the Beach | Van Isle Family Photographer

by ehflegg

Two kids running toward the water

I’m obviously pretty behind in getting this session with Flora and her family at the beach posted, but I love these photos and I’m very much looking forward to beach photo season, so I’m taking a better-late-than-never approach here.

Seed Starting in Small Places

by ehflegg

Seed starting pots in a small space

Since we are solidly out of the Persephone Period, I’m seeing people everywhere from backyard gardeners to local farms starting their seeds and I am JEALOUS. Since we’re in a temporary spot right now and don’t have any garden space of our own, I thought sharing some tips on seed starting in small places would make me feel better.

My Favourite Vancouver Island Photos

by ehflegg

Since I’m always looking for excuses to post hiking photos, I thought making a gallery of some of my favourite Vancouver Island photos could serve as a Wednesday pick-me-up for you and some inspiration to actually pack something for me. We’ve got ferry rides and mushrooms and mussels, both wet and dry seasons represented, and of course multiple shots of my best boi and favourite hiking partner. (I might be saving my all-time favourite for the February Print. Wait and see.)

Why I Take Photos (and why I print them)

by ehflegg

So much of the advice for photographers (really, for any small business owner) is to get super clear on your Why. Mostly I find attempts to write down why I take photos descend into overthinking and general cheese pretty quickly, but I think it’s important to keep talking about what pushes me to take photos so I can better connect with you, dear reader, for whom my reasons (hopefully!) resonate. So I’ll try to keep it together and hopefully we can all get out of here more or less unscathed.

Taking Photos of Christmas Day in Quarantine

by ehflegg

Despite the monster that has been this year and Dr. Bonnie Henry cancelling Christmas telling us to stay safe and stay home, one thing that actually won’t change much is the taking of the photos of Christmas Day.

Food Photography & Kitchen Stories

by ehflegg

It has been awhile since I posted the brownies food photo/kitchen stories shoot with dear friend Leah, but I have been slowly plugging away at my friends and food photography project (or I was, until Covid made it ill-advised to be inside with people outside my household), and I’m thrilled to share these pre-pandemic photos from gnocchi-making with Estlin McPhee.

Take More Photos of Your People

by ehflegg

I was gifted a new old camera recently, and as I’ve often found with new old  cameras, the prospect of shooting a test roll has brought with it a sense of freedom and a desire to document the people around me at this moment.

Fresh flowers and Preserved Fruit

by ehflegg

In the midst of client work, it always feels really important to make time for fun, creative shooting, taking pictures of things that inspire me just because I want to.
